As a former smoker: To all smokers

Posted by Belthagor - 2 days ago

I recently had a thought. When I used to smoke or use a vaporizer on my balcony, now with cannabis being legalized: While I use tobacco in mild amounts sometimes someone would walk by on the street and smoke cannabis. The smell got everywhere including my balcony. Afterwards people would look at me on the balcony while walking by.

I write this to provide an explanation. That I should not be blamed for this because I'm against drugs and I don't use cannabis.

I think it's in the gray area. People say it's legal yet the people who use it generally have problems. So. To all of you who own an apartment or house: Don't smoke on the balcony if you use tobacco. I don't think people should use tobacco either but I felt that I have to write this to prevent problems.

I don't understand the problem?

If they think you're smoking a joint, so what?

@DeaghlanNG California legalized cannabis as well. Federal Law does not allow cannabis. A person in College told me they are breaking Federal Law. I understand it's not my place to change things but unless something is officially legal -that I and other people should not use it nor should we be blamed for the smell.

@DeaghlanNG It was 10 years ago when I was at NYIT. I don't know how things are now. I assume they're the same? I don't know. I like to be appropriate.

I really don't have much experience with the world but a few times the people walking by would pull out their phone so I make assumptions.

I also don't know how these things work. I have to write that as a disclaimer to this whole post.

I guess it may be perfectly fine. I just felt I have to write this. I've been harmed during my life and I don't know how my voice sounds but when I write whether in my private journal or online I accomplish multitudes.

@Belthagor
Depending on where the people smoking weed are, it should be obvious the smell is coming from somewhere else - especially if they're outside. The smell blows away fairly quickly. It will only really linger around if they're smoking inside.

Who is blaming you though? It seems like this is in your head, if I'm understanding you right. And if the feds ever did come a knocking, then you should be able to easily prove it wasn't you - due to the lack of smell, no bloodshot eyes, etc.

@DeaghlanNG I can prove it's not me by a simple blood test.. someone who second-handed the smoke has far less in their bloodstream and we have advanced science.. The thing is wind doesn't really do much for the smell. Unlike tobacco its this heavy smoke that stays in one place.

It’s nice to hear your a former smoker! May your lungs give you praise for it.

But yeah, smoking on a balcony shouldn’t be done, it could blow into someone else’s window or to a place where people who don’t wanna smell it, smell it. This should be common sense, but alas, we live in the 21st century.

@Creeperforce24 In the winter and when it's cold it was not much of a problem. People keep their windows closed and I spoke to a friend about an air conditioner cover that keeps the apartment 2-5 degrees warmer without extra cost so. I don't know if he told everyone though...

As for ventilation. The bathroom has vents. :)

@Belthagor well either way, I’m glad you’re now a former smoker, less damage on the lungs! Hope you can keep it up!

If it's legal where the reader lives, my advice would be: If you 'like cannabis' and you 'like' your health, bake cupcakes or brownies! Smoking isn't the only way to get that stuff into your body.

According to an internet research I did in... 2015, maybe(?), the ideal ratio is 3 gram for a tray of 16 brownies and to mix the cannabis in with molten fat. But more importantly: Practice 'actual baking' first. ;)

@Yatsufusa Maybe they should illegalize it in smoke form then?

@Yatsufusa
It's best to make cannabutter, if you just throw weed into the batter it will taste terrrrrible.

@Belgathor
In my experience, if you smoke outside the smell will be gone in like... 15 mins? Probably less. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about people thinking it's you because even if it was you... what are they gonna do? You'd have to be one miserable SOB to report someone for smoking a joint imo.

@Everyone I think the worst part is when stores would sell things such as vaporizers that are labelled as tobacco but are actually a mixture and people buy them and because they don't have such a strong sense of smell don't realize what it is.. then they throw it away if they're responsible.

@Belthagor
Apparantly the username 'Everyone' is available... neat.

Anyway, that's news to me. We don't get it in shops here... wish we did though, LOL they may not notice the smell, but they will feel the effect.

@Belthagor Well, since you brought it up... Personally, I think we should just outlaw 'tobacco'. The stuff is severely more dangerous than cannabis* - and nobody would smoke cannabis on its own. _The_ most dangerous thing about cannabis is that it's a gateway-drug for tobacco. I am not even joking.

@Yatsufusa
It's true. I stopped smoking weed, but still have cravings for tobacco. Ozzy Osbourne once said in an interview tobacco was the hardest drug to quit.

@DeaghlanNG Tobacco isn't really addictive for me. It's that I don't have much on my schedule.

Buddy, my advice to everyone is do not smoke, whether it's cigarettes, tobacco or weed, it's not good for your health.

As a foreigner, I think that perhaps governments should raise awareness and help more instead of prohibiting and punishing

If you're worried about what people think then that's a whole different issue.

@lajbel (assuming you talk about smoking i ) How's the situation in Argentina?
Over here in Europe everybody knows about the most glaring issues with smoking tobacco. Addiction, lung cancer, "other cancer", losing your feet & legs, losing the ability to speak without a device, reduced fertility, damage to a fetus if the mother smokes - to just name a few from the top of my head.

@Yatsufusa I was referring to drugs in general. The situation with both, drugs and smoking, little is known about it.

What quantities are dangerous? What can it be mixed with? With what not? What are the real dangers? Usually you are sold that drugs simply ruin your life. But nobody stays away from drugs because of that, unless they are very scared. Personally I don't smoke or use any drug.
